Dock Road tragedy

On the night of 4 December 1951, a Royal Marine cadet unit was mown down by a Chatham and District Traction Company bus while marching along Dock Road. The bus ploughed into the rear of the column, killing 24 and injuring 18. Most of the victims were buried in Gillingham cemetery after a funeral service in Rochester Cathedral.
