Medway Council’s Sports Development and 2012 Team strives to ensure Medway achieves its ambition of becoming a centre of excellence for sport.
It has two major focuses:
- encouraging more people to participate in sport; and
- ensuring the residents of Medway have every opportunity to succeed.
It is also committed to maximising the benefits of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games for the people of Medway.
The team works with national governing bodies of sport, local clubs, schools and other organisations to promote participation for all, to champion excellence and to support the provision of safe, good quality services.
Key areas of activity
There are several key areas of sports development activity at Medway.

Medway Games Medway holds a pioneering competition series for the whole community, including the Mini Youth Games, Secondary School Games, Disability Youth Games, Community Games and Business Games.

Sports participation Medway Council encourages participation in sport through the Medway Gets Active campaign, the sports club directory and other mass-participation events.

Club, coach and athlete development Medway Council runs a major programme to fund and support the development of its coaches and athletes, and to strengthen its network of sports clubs, in particular through the promotion of Clubmark.

Leadership and volunteering The Sports Development Team runs a volunteer database and development programme, providing volunteers with exciting opportunities to get involved in sport. The council and its school sport partners also run a number of sports leadership programmes.

PE and school sport Medway Council supports Medway's two school sports partnerships and the Youth Sports Trust in the delivery of physical education and school sport, including througg school club links, teacher development and the staging of large-scale school competitions.

Medway Sports Awards The Sports Development and 2012 Team organises an annual awards night to celebrate the achievements of Medway's clubs and individuals at local, regional, national and international level.
