The Mini Youth Games hockey tournament was held at Holcombe Hockey Club on Wednesday 20 September 2006. A fantastic 18 schools attended, with over 180 children participating in an all action day of hockey and fun.

At each event points, are awarded to each school for simply taking part. This is the main emphasis of the Mini Youth Games – enjoyable participation so the most prestigious prize at any event is always the Fair Play Award.

The Fair Play Award went to St James CE Primary, Isle of Grain. It is crucial that young people are introduced to sport in a friendly, positive environment and that they are encouraged to accept victory and defeat with equal grace. It is important that they learn to show consideration and respect towards opponents, team-mates and officials, as well as to the rules and conventions of the different sports.

The main event enabled each school to play an amazing 17 hockey matches in an even draw against all other Medway schools entered. The points were collated through the day and the winners of the tournament were Allhallows Primary school, also taking the Best Small School Award as a school with under 40 pupils in Year 6, closely followed by St Margaret’s, Rainham, Hempstead Junior School and Walderslade Primary. Ryan Ravenscroft, who plays Hockey for Holcombe Hockey Club and is a South African International player, presented the awards to pupils on the day.

The Sports Development Team would like to thank everyone involved in making this event so successful, including the staff and volunteers from Holcombe Hockey Club, Anchorians Hockey Club, Greenacre School Sports Partnership and Howard School Sports Partnership.
