Mini Youth Games swimming gala

The fourth event of the Mini Youth Games was the swimming gala, held at Black Lion Leisure Centre on Thursday, 1 February 2007. 24 schools attended with up to 400 children participating throughout the day.

The Sports Development Team would like to thank everyone involved in making this event so successful, including the staff and volunteers from Black Lion Leisure Centre, sports team volunteers programme and Greenacre School Sport Partnership.

At each event, points are awarded to each school for simply taking part. This is the main emphasis of the Mini Youth Games – enjoyable participation so the most prestigious prize at any event is always the Fair Play Award. This went to All Saints Primary School, showing once again how crucial it is that young people are introduced to sport in a friendly, positive environment and that they are encouraged to accept victory and defeat with equal grace.

It is important that they learn to show consideration and respect towards opponents, team mates and officials, as well as to the rules and conventions of the different sports.

The event was split into two galas: a swimming gala and a fun gala, to try to include as many pupils as possible, whatever their ability.

The winner of the swimming gala was St Margaret's (Rainham) Junior school and the winner of the fun gala for the second year running was Hempstead Junior School.
