The Mini Youth Games is a multi-sport programme open to all primary school children in Medway irrespective of race, gender, ability or disability. The Mini Youth Games is not just a series of school competitions but an enjoyable experience for all children that promotes lifelong participation in sport.
|
The sports development team sets positive examples for pupils through sport encouraging fair play, team work and respect. The Mini Youth Games: - encourage a fit and healthy lifestyle;
- improve social and communication skills and working as a team;
- encourage children to develop and learn physical skills;
- teach children important life skills;
- provide a safe and fun activity for participation.
The Mini Youth Games series is made up of different sports. At each event points are awarded to each school for simply taking part. This is the main emphasis of the games – enjoyable participation. The most prestigious prize at every event is always the fair play award and there is a fair play league that runs alongside the main league.

It is crucial that young people are introduced to sport in a friendly, positive environment and that they are encouraged to accept victory and defeat with equal grace. It is important that they learn to show consideration and respect towards opponents, team mates and officials, as well as to the rules and conventions of the different sports.

Coaching and after-school clubs
Pre-event coaching is an important part of the Mini Youth Games and also a way of introducing many children to the skills of a new sport. A teacher, a parent or a visiting qualified coach may deliver this coaching and the council's sports development team is keen to support this, either through providing coach education courses for teachers and other adults or by using external coaching expertise.
Where possible, the team would like to offer a limited number of free coaching sessions to schools entering a MYG event. This activity need not stop after the event. The team is keen to assist schools in establishing after-school clubs in new sports and will help with initial coaching costs on condition that the school continues this provision by covering further coaching costs or through a teacher gaining an appropriate coaching qualification.

There are a great many sports clubs in Medway that are keen to welcome new members and build links with local schools. Schools interested in benefiting from club links should contact the Sports Development Team to find out about the clubs in their neighbourhood. The Sports Development Team has published a Sports Club Directory that includes contact details for many sports clubs within Medway.
