What is it?
Medway Youth Parliament (MYP) is an elected body that represents young people in Medway. It has a number of active members from schools and youth groups. Members pass information between the youth parliament and young people in their schools or youth groups.
Medway Youth Parliament works with decision makers on different issues across a number of organisations. The main objective is to get young people’s voices heard.
Aims
To:
- represent all young people in Medway at local, national and international levels;
- respond to issues and concerns that affect the lives of young people;
- seek to inform and influence decision makers at the appropriate level;
- inform young people of:
- the progress made on the issues and concerns raised;
- their rights and responsibilities within the community.
Objectives
To:
- provide a forum for debate on the issues that concern young people in Medway;
- act as a consultancy for Medway Council and other decision-makers on issues that affect young people;
- promote the qualities of young people and the contribution that they make to the community.

What it does Medway Youth Parliament (MYP) meets nine times a year. Meetings are held on Fridays from 6 to 8.30pm in the Council Chambers. Members come from a wide range of schools and clubs and make sure they have fun and get to know each other, as well as do the job. Young people can get their voices heard through MYP in a number of ways. If you are at school, you can speak to your school council or your MYP representative (who is probably on the school council anyway). If you belong to a youth group, there could be a MYP representative you can speak to. Alternatively, if you would like to consult with MYP on any issues, please get in touch to see how it can help. How it works Medway Youth Parliament is made up of two representatives from each secondary school and two from any youth groups that want to be involved. Members can choose to join sub-committees to discuss specific issues. These include education, regeneration, environment, transport, health, crime and community safety.

There is a cabinet group made up of the chair, vice-chair, treasurer, secretary and a few other members. This group is elected from the youth parliament each spring and meets two weeks before full parliament. It sets the meeting agendas, invites guests and decides the main discussion topics. Other meetings are held when needed to discuss specific issues, like transport or community safety. They can also be arranged when someone from outside the parliament wants to talk at a meeting and cannot wait until the next scheduled meeting or needs more time than would normally be available at a full meeting. The door is always open for new groups to be represented, so please get in touch.
