Medway Council's Community Services Directorate, working closely in co-ordination with The Kent Association for the Blind, can provide the following services for adults:
Support for appropriate eye care
To identify eye conditions and/or the need for spectacle wear by:
- vision screening,
- functional assessment of vision,
- preparation for clinical assessment,
- referrals to ophthalmic services,
- advocacy for appropriate treatment,
- registration as blind or partially-sighted.
Help in all aspects of independent living such as:
- cooking and other daily living skills,
- equipment and adaptations,
- benefits and concessions,
- leisure and hobbies,
- orientation and mobility,
- communication,
- sensory stimulation,
- lighting and contrast,
- low vision aids,
- tape services.
Training sessions
To demonstrate the needs of people who are blind or who have a visual impairment to:
- professionals in other services,
- carers and families,
- volunteers,
- peers.
Individual support and advice
- listening, advice and support,
- explanation of eye conditions and the effects,
- registration as blind or partially-sighted,
- home assessments,
- referrals to appropriate clinicians and agencies.
