The review into bereavement services was undertaken by a task group set up by the Community Services Overview and Scrutiny Committee. The task group investigated the condition of the cemeteries and all the services Medway Council provides to people who have been bereaved. It also looked at how the service could be taken forward, taking into consideration forthcoming changes in the legal requirements surrounding the service. The task group met five times, including a site visit that took in the Medway Crematorium and Strood, Chatham and Rochester Cemeteries. The group gathered evidence and discussed the following issues:
|

|
- crematorium facilities,
- the availability of space for graves,
- long-term financial planning,
- the safety of memorials,
- the environmental impact of cremation,
- staff resources.
The task group made several recommendations on these issues, which can be found in its report (pdf 1,488KB). The council's cabinet considered these recommendations at its meeting on 25 September 2007.
