Medway Council's Children's Services Directorate, working closely in co-ordination with The Kent Association for the Blind, can provide the following services for children and young people.
Support for appropriate eye care
To identify eye conditions and/or the need for spectacle wear by:
- vision screening,
- functional assessment of vision,
- preparation for clinical assessment,
- referrals to ophthalmic services,
- advocacy for appropriate treatment,
- registration as blind or partially-sighted.
Family support
- listening, advice and support,
- explanation of eye conditions and the effects,
- registration as blind or partially-sighted,
- advice on benefits and concessions,
- home assessment,
- referrals to other agencies and support groups,
- advice on sensory stimulation,
- functional assessment of vision,
- free toy library.
Support to develop skills for independence
- communication,
- orientation and mobility,
- play and leisure,
- cooking and other daily living skills,
- use of equipment and adaptations.
Training sessions
To demonstrate the needs of children who are blind or have a vision impairment to:
- professionals in other services,
- carers and families,
- volunteers,
- peers.
