Training on sex and relationships education (SRE) and drugs education

Core modules

  • Listening and group skills
    An overview of good practice in listening skills and group work.
  • Youth development
    An exploration of youth development and its importance to SRE issues, looking at social learning theory and reflecting on your own adolescence and assessing the impact this may have on young people today.
  • Personal and social skills 1 – effective thinking
    Promoting an understanding of the importance of effective thinking skills in realising full potential and raising self esteem. Empowering participants to help young people develop these skills.
  • Diversity
    Exploring attitudes towards diversity and recognising their potential effects. Gaining an understanding of national guidance about valuing diversity and addressing discrimination in schools.

Further modules

  • Personal and social skills 2 - goal setting
    Promoting an understanding of how to create a vision and how to grow, personally and professionally. Exploring the specific steps to achieving goals.
  • Sexually Transmitted infections (STIs)
    Participants will learn about different types of STI and how to prevent them. Information to direct young people to local services will be provided.
  • Contraception
    Participants will gain a basic understanding of methods of contraception and the information needed to direct young people to the appropriate services. This module includes a free contraception teaching box and condoms for each school.
  • Pregnancy
    Participants will gain a basic understanding of normal human development and feel comfortable and confident talking to young people about the subject.
  • Abortion
    This module will provide an overview of issues relating to abortion, including the law and confidentiality. Values and morals and the effect these may have on young people will also be addressed. This module includes a free Education for Choice teaching pack and video for each school.
  • Well person and cancer
    Participants will have a basic knowledge and understanding of how a healthy lifestyle can reduce the risk of developing cancer. This module includes a free Know Your Balls teaching pack and video for each school.
  • Domestic abuse
    Participants will gain an understanding of the various aspects of domestic abuse and be able to identify possible signs and help young people to seek advice.
  • Exploitation not choice
    Participants will gain an understanding of the differences between adult prostitution and the sexual exploitation of a young person. They will also gain an understanding of the concepts of grooming, coercion and abuse and become able to identify the possible signs of these activities and enable young people to seek help.

Drugs education modules

  • Drugs – know the facts (part 1)
    Participants will gain an improved knowledge of drug terminology, classifications and facts relating to the main drugs in each category and a greater understanding of the short and long-term effects of different drugs.
  • Opinions and attitudes towards drugs (part 2)
    Participants will be able to evaluate opinions and ideas relating to drug use and have a greater self-awareness of attitudes relating to drug use. They will also improve their knowledge of drugs law and the influence of the media.
  • Personal and social skills related to drug use (part 3)
    Participants be empowered to educate young people about how to resist peer pressure and make informed decisions. They will gain knowledge of where to get help and how to give advice about drug-related issues.

All modules are approximately three hours long and can be delivered on individual school sites at a mutually agreed time. The modules are delivered by the Living, Loving, Learning Training Team, which includes representatives from school nursing, family planning, health promotion, midwifery, Connexions and the youth service.
