Residents encouraged to sign up for The Big Splash 2018

Residents are being encouraged to dive into a weekend of fun aquatic activities for the whole family at Medway Council’s sports centres in January.

The Medway Big Splash returns on Saturday and Sunday, 20 to 21 January 2018.

The fun-filled weekend is packed full of free activities for all the family at Medway Park, Hoo Sports Centre, Splashes Sports Centre and Strood Sports Centre.

Big Splash Aquathlon

MedwayTri will be back on the track and in the pool with their Big Splash Aquathlon event at Medway Park on Sunday, 21 January, from 1pm to 6pm. Adults and juniors are invited to swim between 150m to 500m and run between 1.5km and 5km on the athletics track.

Big Splash Swim Challenge

Residents are also being challenged to see how far they can swim in the Big Splash Swim Challenge at Strood Sports Centre on Sunday, 21 January, from 1pm to 6pm. Swimmers of all abilities, and all ages, are invited to take part in the charity swim for the Medway NHS Foundation Trust Challengers can take on individual challenges with distances of 50m (two lengths), 1km (40 lengths), 1.5km(60 lengths) or 2km (80 lengths). Groups of up to four swimmers can also take part in the team challenge and swim either 2km or 5km (200 lengths).

Taster sessions

During the Big Splash weekend Medway Council’s qualified instructors will be offering swimmers the chance to try-out diving, Rookie Lifeguarding, synchronised swimming and Royal Lifesaving Society water safety skills. A number of pool parties featuring aquatic taster sessions including aqua zorbs, water polo, scuba, kayaking and much more will also take place at sports centres across Medway.

Swim England distance swimming awards

New for 2018, swimmers will also be given the chance to achieve coveted Swim England distance swimming awards from 100m to 1,000m as well as the Medway Big Splash mile of 64 lengths. The distance awards are open to swimmers of all ages who can safely swim a minimum distance of 100m.

Cllr Howard Doe, Medway Council’s Portfolio Holder for Community Services, said: “The Big Splash is now it its fourth year and we hope that once again lots of local people will get involved. We have excellent sporting facilities here in Medway and we look forward to welcoming residents to our sports centres. There are plenty of events for families to enjoy including public pool parties, aquatic taster sessions and a swimathon.”
