Business Rates Relief

9 October 2017

Pubs, local newspapers and small businesses in Medway may be eligible for a discount on their business rates.

The government announced a £1,000 business rate discount for pubs, with a rateable value of up to £100,000, in the Spring Budget. It was part of a £435 million package to support businesses facing significant rate increases after the business rates revaluation. The discount will only be granted in the current financial year, 2017/18.

Small businesses will be helped

Small businesses which are facing large increases this year due to the loss of small business rate relief or rural rate relief will also be helped. A relief limit will stop the increases from going over £600 and will restrict increases for the next four years.

Local newspaper offices will receive a discount of up to £1,500 a year for 2017/18 and 2018/19.

Medway Council’s Cabinet approved the rate relief scheme for newspapers, small businesses and pubs in September.

Medway Council will notify qualifying businesses and automatically award relief, based on the information available to them.

If you have not been awarded any of the above reliefs, and think you may qualify, email rates@medway.gov.uk.
