Medway is flying the flag as one of the UK’s best green spaces

19 July 2017

Seven of Medway’s magnificent parks have been recognised by the Green Flag Award Scheme as some of the very best in the world.

Capstone Country Park, Riverside Country Park, Great Lines Heritage Park, The Vines, Broomhill Park, Hillyfields Community Park and Gillingham Park are among a record-breaking 1,797 UK parks and green spaces that received the prestigious Green Flag Award on Tuesday, 18 July – the mark of a quality park or green space.

Medway’s thriving towns are surrounded by beautiful parks and countryside, which Medway Council works hard to maintain so people can enjoy the area’s open spaces throughout the year. The council has invested in improving footpaths and cycle routes across Medway, giving people more access to enjoy the impressive green spaces.

Recognising beautifully maintained parks

The international award, now into its third decade, is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible environmental standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent visitor facilities.

Among the award winners are five beautiful urban parks and two stunning country parks; Capstone Farm Country Park in Chatham, which covers 114 hectares of former farmland set on the North Downs, and Riverside Country Park in Rainham, which covers 100 hectares alongside the Medway Estuary. Both country parks have a variety of habitats for wildlife, from ancient woodlands to mudflats and salt marsh.

Cllr Howard Doe, Portfolio Holder for Community Services at Medway Council, said: “We are pleased that our seven beautiful parks have been recognised for their high standards. Medway is proud of its green spaces and the Green Flag Award celebrates the dedication that goes into maintaining the parks to such a high standard. The park rangers, together with our Friends groups and volunteers, work hard to maintain our parks so they can be enjoyed by all. I hope residents will continue to explore Medway’s green spaces and enjoy its beauty.”

Celebrating our parks

International Green Flag Award scheme manager Paul Todd said: “We are delighted to be celebrating another record-breaking year for the Green Flag Award scheme.

“Each flag is a celebration of the thousands of staff and volunteers who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award. The success of the scheme, especially in these challenging times, demonstrates just how much parks matter to people.”
