Parents encouraged to take part in the school admissions consultation

31 October 2017

There’s still time to take part in a consultation on Medway’s school admissions process.

Medway Council is asking for views on the proposed school admission arrangements for the 2019 academic year. Parents have until 5pm on Friday, 17 November 2017 to take part in the annual consultation.

Medway is responsible for consulting on the co-ordinated admissions schemes for primary and secondary schools, and consults on the admissions criteria for community and voluntary controlled schools, including the number of children who can be admitted.

Supporting armed forces families

For primary admissions, there is a proposal to introduce a criterion to assist the children of crown servants, such as army families, in gaining a place at a community or voluntary controlled school.

Other schools, such as foundation, voluntary aided schools and academies are responsible for consulting on and setting their own admission arrangements. Details of their proposals will be available on their websites, as well as the council’s website. Any feedback on the consultations for foundation, voluntary aided schools and academies must be lodged directly with the relevant school.

Cllr Martin Potter, Portfolio Holder for Educational Attainment and Improvement, said: "Starting school, whether primary or secondary, is an important step for all children and we are committed to making the school admissions process as straightforward as possible for everyone. We are also looking at ways to further our support for the armed forces families already living or due to move into Medway; these children have often moved multiple schools with families moving where the crown servant is stationed. The proposal is for the oversubscription criteria to be amended so that children of crown servants who are due to be posted in Medway will have a higher priority for a place at a community or voluntary controlled school. I would encourage all parents, including crown servant families, to take part in the consultation and share their views to help us further improve the school admissions process."

Take part in the consultation

A guide to secondary school admissions will be available online from the end of May 2018 and a primary admissions version from the middle of September 2018.
