Members of the public can visit Eastgate House for free this month

6 December 2017

Members of the public have the chance to visit one of the most impressive and distinctive buildings in Rochester’s historic High Street, Eastgate House, for free in December.

Eastgate House is part of a National Lottery Scheme where players can get free entry to the grade I listed building, if they present their ticket. If you play the lottery you will be able to use your ticket to receive free entry, for one adult, from Wednesday, 13 to Friday, 15 December. The offer is valid for lottery draws between 11 and 17 December 2017.

Eastgate House opened in the summer after a £2.1million conservation project to restore the Elizabethan home. In 2012, Medway Council successfully bid for a £1.2million grant towards the project, raised by National Lottery players and awarded by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF). For the first time visitors were able to learn the history of Eastgate House, a 16th century Elizabethan home, Victorian boarding school and an inspiration to Charles Dickens.

The house is one of 350 participating National Lottery funded visitor attractions across the UK which is saying thank you to people who have raised money for good causes by taking part in the National Lottery.

'Eastgate House is a great day out for all the family'

Cllr Howard Doe, Medway Council’s Portfolio Holder for Community Services, said: “Eastgate House is a great day out for all of the family as is an important part of Medway’s history. If you participate in the lottery I would encourage you to use your ticket to visit Eastgate House for free. We are grateful for the funding from the HLF which made the restoration possible. We are very proud of what we’ve achieved by restoring the building and visitors enjoy learning about the house. There’s also plenty going on at Eastgate House for children this Christmas, including a Victorian Father Christmas, dressed in green, reading festive tales to visitors.”

'December is a wonderful time to experience the UK’s rich, diverse and exciting heritage'

Ros Kerslake, Chief Executive of the Heritage Lottery Fund, said: “December is a wonderful time to experience the UK’s rich, diverse and exciting heritage, which has been transformed by more than £7billion National Lottery funding since 1994. This is a small gesture of thanks and a way of giving something back to the people who buy tickets.”

Eastgate House is open each week from Wednesday to Sunday from 10am to 5pm. For more information call 01634 332700 or visit www.medway.gov.uk/eastgatehouse.
