Flagging up St George's Day

Date: 18/04/2008           Category: Tourism

The skies of Medway will be brightened on St George’s Day when three flags are raised to celebrate England’s patron saint. Flags will be flown from Medway Council’s administrative headquarters at Gun Wharf, the Compass Centre in Chatham and the Civic Centre in Strood this Wednesday, 23 April. Rochester Castle will not be able to fly a St George’s flag this year, due to important maintenance work being undertaken, which is expected to be completed in the summer. Medway Council's Portfolio Holder for Community Services Cllr Howard Doe explained: “We need to undertake the important repair before allowing staff into the tower. Unfortunately flags will not fly at the castle until the repair is completed, in agreement with English Heritage and under scheduled ancient monument consent conditions.”
