Medway Artists looking for your vote

Date: 06/06/2008           Category: Arts and Libraries

North Kent Local Authorities Arts Partnership, in collaboration with the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, wishes to commission a series of three temporary works of site-specific environmental public art across Gravesham, Medway and Swale. The identified locations for the installations are RSPB Reserve at Cliffe Pools in Medway, RSPB Reserve at Elmley Marshes in Swale and The Dell at the Riverside Leisure Area in Gravesham. A complimentary programme of community events and workshops will accompany the project this summer. Artists across the UK were invited to submit project proposals that explore cultural and environmental aspects and reflect the unique identity and local distinctiveness of the chosen sites for the commission. Representatives of NKLAAP and RSPB have short-listed two artist’s proposals to go forward to the final stage of the selection process. These are: Human Nest by Jane Pitt – Strong simple house forms exploring issues of how and why birds create their environments and how that links to the human experience through construction, sustainability, shelter, materials and conservation. A sound piece sung/spoken by local people, using phonetic annotation of birdsong forms part of the project. Moon Viewing by Stephen Turner – Exploration of effects of the moon, studying nocturnal worlds throughout a complete 28 day lunar cycle at each site. Chance observations and notations of wildlife will be web-logged and photographed and material from these observances will be presented visually at a temporary ‘moon base’ on each site, for daylight viewing for visitors. Both of the artists are based in Chatham, and one of them will be appointed to undertake the commission across all three sites. The project will be delivered during June – September 08. NKLAAP and RSPB wish to consult the local community and hear your views about these proposals before the final decision. Please visit www.nklaap.com for project proposals and vote for your favorite online by emailing info@nklaap.com. Deadline for online voting is Sunday 8 June 08. NKLAAP is a partnership of three local councils, Gravesham Borough Council, Swale District Council and Medway Unitary Authority, working closely with Kent County Council and Arts Council England, South East.
