Bringing Shakespeare's Dream to Medway

Date: 01/07/2008           Category: Arts and Libraries

Rochester Castle, Upnor Castle and Fort Amherst in Chatham are among the venues hosting an outdoor performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, presented by The Changeling Theatre Company and Hazlitt Arts Centre this summer. This will be the third time the group have performed the play in the open air, with the aim of offering all the family an opportunity to enjoy one of Shakespeare’s most popular plays in a striking setting. The company will work with a mix of performers, from West End actors to some familiar faces from previous years to brand new, enthusiastic young actors from the community. The Changeling’s Artistic Director Rob Forknall says “The play is going to be set in a circle with the audience sitting around the outside. However, some of the audience will be invited to sit on magical rugs on the inside of the circle, so they can literally play with the fairies!” “Anyone who saw our previous versions of A Midsummer Nights Dream will know that our productions are modern exciting romps into another world of madness and fun. This year’s show is a rollercoaster of thrills, tears and laughter.” The production has also been given a recycling twist by designer Clare Southern. Taking her inspiration from a bird’s nest she saw made from old plastic bags and other detritus, she is planning to create wonderful, vibrant costumes for the performances. Clare says, “As the play has very much the vibe of a travelling performance, my costumes will conjure up the idea that the fairies and other characters have customised their outfits from bits of rubbish found around the countryside”. A Midsummer Night’s Dream will be performed at Fort Amherst in Chatham on Wednesday, 23 July and Saturday, 9 August, Rochester Castle on Thursday 24 and Friday 25 July, and at Upnor Castle on Tuesday, 29 and Wednesday, 30 July. All performances start at 7.30pm, and tickets cost from £10. It is recommended that visitors bring their own comfortable seating for the performances.
