All change on the buses

Date: 02/07/2008           Category: Highways Traffic and Parking

Medway residents holding bus passes can now travel further for longer. Although Medway residents have been able to travel from 9am for journeys starting in the Medway Council area, the general start time in Kent has been 9.30am. However, since Monday, 30 June Medway residents can travel anywhere in Kent from 9am on weekdays. Similarly, people from outside Medway will be able to travel in this area from 9am. Medway Council have agreed to fund any extra costs arising from this improvement in availability which helps to ensure a simple arrangement for travel throughout Medway and Kent complementing Kent County Council’s recent decision to extend travel times in their area. Evening journey restrictions have also been lifted. Previously, passes could only be used for journeys starting before 11pm, Monday to Friday. With effect from 30 June, passes may be used up to the close of service throughout Medway and Kent Pass holders can continue to travel free at any time on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays throughout Medway and Kent. Portfolio Holder for Frontline Services, Cllr Phil Filmer said: “Medway Council has recognised the benefits of travel from 9am and, unlike the Kent Councils, we have continued to offer travel at this time for our own residents since the changes in April. The council has now agreed to fund the costs of the extra trips in the Medway area for both Medway and Kent residents. “Medway Council is taking the risk on this in difficult financial times but we are pleased to be able to work with the Kent councils to help improve the opportunities for passholders to get out and about in a move to give residents better value for money.”
