Banking for success at Medway Business Games

HSBC have been crowned Medway Business Games champions for 2008. They were confirmed as the inaugural competition winners after the fifth and the final event of the Games at Rainham Netball Centre on Friday, 11 July. While banking rivals Lloyds TSB walked away with the netball winners' trophy, HSBC’s performance was enough to secure them the overall honours ahead of Medway Council and MHS Homes. HSBC's mixed team had faced a tricky opening match against an impressive all-women Lloyds TSB team and went on to finish the tournament in sixth place. Medway Council – their nearest rivals going into the event – finished fourth, which was not enough to overturn HSBC’s lead in the business games table. The netball tournament was played on a league basis, with everyone playing everyone in an afternoon of friendly competition. Within the first two rounds, Lloyds TSB and RBS had emerged as the teams to beat, and it was Lloyds who eventually took the title after an enthralling tournament decider. The Medway Business Games were organised by Medway Council’s 2012 and sports development team as part of the Medway Games programme, which aims to engage the whole community in fun, organised sport. Medway 2012 Deputy Manager Helen Cockersole said: “We’ve been delighted with the response by Medway businesses to these inaugural games. “The tournaments have been played in a great spirit of friendly competition, and we look forward to seeing them resume battle in 2009.” HSBC will be presented with the winners' trophy at the Medway Sports Awards in November.
