Warming up for the Medway Mile

Date: 22/07/2008           Category: Leisure

Medway will continue its countdown to the 2012 Olympics this weekend with a free festival of sport for the whole community. The Black Lion Leisure Centre in Gillingham is the venue for The Medway Mile: Medway Gets Active event on Sunday, 27 July – four years to the day until the start of the London 2012 Games. Visitors to the centre in Mill Road will be able to enjoy a free family inflatbles pool session from noon. Then from 1.30pm to 6.30pm, a huge array of Medway sports clubs and organisations will be laying on free have-a-go sessions and demonstrations. The public will be able to try sports including table tennis, trampolining, aerobics, athletics, squash, short tennis, judo and ju jitsu, while those who bring their swimming kit can also enjoy scuba diving and snorkelling. Other attractions will include human table football and inflatable beach volleyball, an Army assault course hula-hooping, face-painting and a toddlers’ roll-about session. The public will also be able to learn more about public health activities in Medway, and about the £11million project to transform the Black Lion into Medway Park, a regional centre of sporting excellence. The climax of the afternoon will be the second annual Medway Mile. Medway’s top club runners will contest the elite races from 3.15pm, and then at 4pm it will be the turn of the massed runners and walkers to complete the one-mile course starting and finishing on the fields of the Black Lion. The Medway Mile was held for the first time last year to mark Medway’s annual countdown to 2012. It is organised by Medway Council with support from Medway Primary Care Trust and the Medway Messenger. The whole event is free and everyone who completes the Medway Mile receives a free souvenir t-shirt. The mile is open to people of any age and ability. Runners and walkers can register in advance for the Mile at www.medway.gov.uk/london2012, or on the day at the registration tent. There is no need to register in advance for any of the free have-a-go activities on offer throughout the afternoon.
