A walking group will celebrate a summer of making new friends and getting fit with a picnic at a Chatham recreation ground. The All Saints Children’s Centre Walking Group has been taking fortnightly walks since Jo Bunn, who works at the centre, formed it in June. The group is aimed at parents and their children, who can either walk or enjoy the view from the comfort of their buggy. On Thursday, 14 August, the walkers will set off from the centre in Magpie Hall Road in Chatham at 11am and make their way to Luton recreation ground in Capstone Road, where they will have a lunchtime picnic and their children work up an appetite by playing in the park. After lunch, the group can either return to the centre, or continue playing at the park. Since the group was formed, members have enjoyed walks to parks in the Chatham area, where the children can enjoy the fresh air and play with other children, while their parents meet other centre users and get some gentle exercise. Community Development Co-ordinator Jo Bunn said: “We wanted to set this group up to provide the parents with a form of exercise that doesn’t cost anything and to help encourage the families to keep fit and healthy. The walks also give people the opportunity to discover more about their community, such as new play areas where they can take their children. “The group has been very successful and we are attracting between five to 10 parents a walk. We hope the weather will remain sunny for our picnic as it will probably be one of the last walks we will be able to take before some of the parents’ children return to school in September. It will be a chance for people to relax with their new friends while their children play in the park.” The walking group will continue to take place throughout the year, weather permitting. For more information about this group, please contact Jo Bunn on 01634 338833. You are welcome to send a photographer to the centre at 10.50am to see them start their walk, or make your way to Luton recreation ground. The picnic should finish at about 1pm.
