Date: 13/08/2008           Category: Young People

Teenagers who use a youth centre in Strood have raised £100 for a leading charity that supports children with cancer. Strood Youth Centre in Montford Road, threw open its doors to the community on 30 July to support the charity CLIC Sargent. Footballers from Charlton FC got in on the act by agreeing to a penalty shoot-out, while visitors helped raise money by entering a pool competition, have their face painted, bought cakes and wore fancy dress costumes. X-Factor contestant Ashley McKenzie also put in an appearance at the fun-packed event. Youth worker Karen Yusuf said: “The event was a great success. We had a good turn-out and there was a fantastic atmosphere. “The event had been organised by young people who attend the centre. They chose the charity, the activities and the special guest and even designed the poster to publicise the evening. “An event like this teaches the young people new skills and gets them active.” Portfolio Holder for Children’s Services, Councillor Les Wicks said: “This is a really positive way to raise money and an enjoyable way to get the local community involved in such a worthwhile cause.” Dan Powell, the charity’s community fund-raising manager for the south east, said: “On behalf of all of the children and young people CLIC Sargent work with can I say a huge thank you to the teenagers who organised this event. “We rely on the generosity of the public to fund our vital work which includes two CLIC Sargent nurses based at the Medway Maritime Hospital. These nurses work in the community with young people and their families to help them at an incredibly difficult time by providing clinical and emotional support. Thank you again and well done.” At 1pm on Thursday, 21 August, the teenagers will present their donation to a charity representative. You are welcome to send a photographer / media crew to the presentation. Visitors paid £1 to enter the centre, and every penny raised will be given to the charity. CLIC Sargent provides individual support to children and young people with cancer and leukaemia and their families. For further information, contact the centre on 01634 718196
