A Medway rugby club has been rewarded for raising standards within the game. Sport England awarded Medway Rugby Club the Clubmark seal of approval for improving sporting achievement. It is the first rugby club in Medway to receive the status. The club, which was founded in 1931, also received the Rugby Football Union Community Rugby Seal of Approval. Clubmark was developed by Sport England, and is a set of national standards for National Governing Bodies of Sport to adopt and their affiliated clubs to meet. The accreditation recognises the achievements of sports clubs in England that provide high quality and welcoming environments for young people and their efforts to develop young players’ talents. Medway Council’s Sports Development Team has worked closely with the team to organise school tag rugby leagues, competitions and tournaments. At the same time, the club has established a community coaching team to support the delivery of this voluntary work in the schools and has supported teachers to enhance their own development and coaching skills. Sports Development Officer Sarah Dand said: “The club has spent the past two years working tirelessly to enhance and increase its junior development programme. “I have seen the club grow in terms of its development and I am delighted the club has proven to be a determined, well-managed club with the drive that enabled them to achieve Clubmark accreditation.” The club’s Director of Rugby Mark Marriot said: “The award of Clubmark is an important milestone and much assistance has been received from the Rugby Football Union and Medway Council to ensure this centre of excellence continues to offer rugby to all of the community and beyond.” The club consists of four senior men’s teams, a veteran men’s side for players over 35 years, a ladies’ team, which England vice captain Rachel Burford played for, and youth teams for under-13s and under-19s. There are also mini teams for under-12s and under-sevens, for both boys and girls.
