Date: 09/09/2008           Category: Events

Medway’s first ever Skipathon will take place at The Black Lion Centre in Gillingham later this month. Schools from across Medway have been invited to take part in the event, organised by Medway’s Healthy Schools Team in conjunction with Broadstairs based company Skip2bfit. Among the schools taking part will be Featherby Junior School in Gillingham, All Saints Primary School in Chatham, Woodlands Primary School in Gillingham, Sherwin Knight Junior School in Strood, Spinnens Acre Junior School in Chatham, and Byron Primary School in Gillingham. Each school will be represented by a team of eight children, who will enter into a number of skipping competitions. There will also be a prize for the overall winning school. The event will be attended by Cllr Les Wicks, portfolio holder for Children’s Services. Skip2bfit Ltd was launched in 2002 by John McCormack, former number two Amateur Boxing Association Ranked Heavyweight of Great Britain. John has used his 20 years of boxing experience to establish skipping as an easy to learn, exciting and challenging activity, which links healthy living to science and education. By visiting schools and teaching the benefits of the exercise John has already reached over 150,000 school children. Zoe Barkham, Medway’s Public Health Manager for Children’s Services said: “We are really excited to be holding the first Medway-wide challenge day. Skipping is a terrific way for children to keep fit, because they don't need fancy clothes or equipment and they can practise anywhere. Schools all over Medway have enjoyed working with John and for many children it's especially exciting because they find something they are good at. It's also a great way to learn about healthy competition and how we can all work to improve our best performance too”. The Skipathon takes place on Thursday, 25 September in the main sports hall at the Black Lion Centre from 9.30am to 12.30pm. All are welcome to come along and watch the skippers in action.
