Rainham Judo Club is celebrating becoming the first club to move into Medway’s new centre of sporting excellence after receiving a £10,000 lottery grant. The Awards for All funding will be used to provide a new sprung floor and mats for the new judo centre at Medway Park, which will become the club’s new home from next month. The dojo is the first project to be completed as part of the £11m Government-funded transformation of the Black Lion Leisure Centre in Gillingham. It includes two matted areas plus dedicated changing rooms, viewing area and kitchen facilities. This new centre will enable Rainham Judo Club to offer a variety of classes for all ages, while senior players include England judo players and Medway elite athletes James Lewis and Sam Malkinson will benefit from practising in a high-quality environment. Club secretary Wendy Malkinson said: “We are very excited about moving into the new centre next month. It will provide a fantastic base for our club and for our future development.” Rainham Judo Club already has the bronze standard for Clubmark accreditation from its national governing body and is working towards becoming the first Medway club to achieve the gold standard. The British Judo accreditation scheme recognises clubs that are committed to providing a safe, effective and child-friendly environment for children and young people. Sarah Dand, Medway Council Sports Development Officer, said: “These are exciting times for the club and for the sport of judo in Medway. I congratulate the club on their lottery grant and look forward to the sport of judo being developed further at Medway Park.” Medway Park is the area’s new flagship multi-sport facility and has been approved as a pre-Games training camp venue for 13 Olympic sports and eight Paralympic sports, including judo and Paralympic judo. Additional new facilities at the centre will include an eight-lane athletics tracks, a 12-court sports hall and a purpose-built gymnastics centre.
