A good cause to be funny at The Brook Theatre

Date: 22/09/2008           Category: Arts and Libraries

Watch the best of female comedy and discover the benefits of a good laugh when The Nivea Funny Women Live Tour makes a stop at the Brook Theatre in Chatham next month. The show features past and present winners and finalists from the acclaimed new talent competition, The Nivea Funny Women Awards, which began six years ago on a quest to recognise the best new female comedy talent. Now more than 200 women take part in the Nivea Funny Women Awards each year. This year’s winner is Canadian Katherine Ryan, who moved to the UK with her comedian fiancé “because British comedy is the best in the world”. Katherine, a former children’s TV presenter, has successfully battled cancer and suffers from the chronic autoimmune disease, Lupus. Despite showing remarkable courage and confidence she is modest about her success. Katherine says: “Winning the 2008 Awards in June at the world famous Comedy Store in London felt like such a personal victory because it reinforced my belief that wonderful things can happen in the face of adversity. The Funny Women team are such angels for promoting female talent - an absolute minority in comedy”. Previous winners and finalists have gone on to become successful on the comedy circuit. Zoe Lyons won a nomination for best newcomer in the prestigious If.Comedie Awards at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2007. Andi Osho has recently been seen on E4’s Tonightly Show and Suzy Bennett appeared in The Diets That Time Forgot on Channel 4 earlier this year. “It’s great for us to put a show together like this,” says producer Lynne Parker. “We are very proud of our winners, finalists and all the women who take part in the competition. As an organisation Funny Women supports various charities throughout the year and Katherine is living proof that you can still laugh about life whatever it deals out to you. The show is just as much about using humour to improve well being as it is pure entertainment - a good evening of laughter is very therapeutic”. The Nivea Funny Women Live tour comes to The Brook Theatre on Monday, 20 October at 8pm. All ticket holders will have a chance to grab a beauty freebie and enter a raffle in aid of Ovarian Cancer Action. There’ll also be an exclusive prize draw offering the opportunity to win goodies worth £50 and a fabulous spa day. Tickets cost £10 and are available from the box office on 01634 338338 or online at www.medway.gov.uk/theatrebooking ENDS For further details please contact Lisa Caleno on 01634 338308 or email lisa.caleno@medway.gov.uk Notes to Editors: Funny Women was started in 2002 by Lynne Parker as a platform to find and celebrate female comedy talent. The NIVEA Funny Women Awards search for new talent across Britain and encourage any woman who thinks she’s got what it takes to perform live stand up to give it a try. The Awards took place for the sixth year running this year. Funny Women raises funds and awareness for a variety of causes that aim to help and heal women. This includes Ovarian Cancer Action which raises awareness and funds research into ovarian cancer and is part of the Helen Harris Memorial Trust which is dedicated to defeating ovarian cancer.
