Competition: Children help put Medway on the map

Date: 26/09/2008           Category: Communications

What do children and young people visualise when they think of Medway? Maybe having fun with their friends at the skate park in Jackson’s Field, Rochester, or scrambling up the new bicycle track at Capstone Farm Country Park? To celebrate Medway Council’s 10th birthday, school pupils are being invited to let their creative juices run wild by entering an exciting art competition to tell the council what they think about Medway – their favourite places, what they think of the area, Medway past, present and, more importantly, the future. Pupils aged four to 16 can submit their artwork to the Medway: My Space competition in a variety of forms - from paint, collage, photography, graphic and computer-generated artwork. The competition closes on Monday, 10 November. The artwork will be displayed at The Brook Theatre Gallery in Chatham throughout January, 2009. The winners will be awarded a range of prizes, including a family ticket to The Central Theatre’s pantomime Cinderella, starring EastEnders star Joe Swash, a family swimming pass at one of Medway’s four indoor swimming pools, and their artwork published on an up-coming artists’ area on the council’s website. Medway Council’s Portfolio Holder for Community Services Cllr Howard Doe said: “There is a lot of exciting work taking place to put Medway on the map and raise the area’s profile. “Opportunities like this celebrate the area’s arts and creativity and we hope the Medway: My Space competition will combine our young people’s artistic talent with their vision for the future. I am looking forward to seeing the creative entries for myself.” The competition is open to anyone aged four to 16. There will be two categories, with a winner being drawn from each: four to 10-year-olds and 11 to 16-year-olds. Artwork should be no larger that A3 and entries cannot be returned. Entries should be sent to Medway: My Space competition, Communications, Medway Council, Gun Wharf, Dock Road, Chatham. ME4 4TR. For full terms and conditions see www.medway.gov.uk/artcompetition2008
