Medway kicked off the Cultural Olympiad in style with a fireworks fiesta and film screening on the walls of Rochester Castle. A crowd of almost a thousand people gathered for the unveiling of the specially-commissioned Welcome to Medway film. They were also treated to live music, martial arts demonstrations and a public art workshop before the big fireworks finale at 20:12. The event on Saturday, 27 September was one of more than 600 activities that took place across the country as part of the Open Up, Light Up Cultural Olympiad launch weekend. The film, which was projected 40ft on to the side of the iconic landmark, was shot throughout the summer and includes footage of individuals, club members and mass participation events such as Race For Life, the Dickens Festival, Mini Youth Games, Fuse Festival and the Medway Mile. It has been produced by local film-maker Gary Weston and will be used to promote Medway nationally and internationally as both a first-class tourist destination and a sporting centre of excellence. Local artists Wendy Daws and Paivi Seppala also ran fun drawing workshop in the Doodle Den, where visitors helped created a collaborative communal piece of artwork focusing on the theme of Welcome to Medway.
