Crowds to gather for cultural celebrations in Medway

Medway’s Black History Month celebrations are launched this weekend with two special guests – MC Bashy and Medway’s very own X Factor finalist Ashley McKenzie. The musical festivities will take place at The Brook Theatre, Old Town Hall, Chatham, on Saturday, 4 October from 7pm. The launch will start with a with African drumming and dancing and will continue throughout the evening with performances from local artists, such as NXG, a group of young Christian MC’s, Asian Bhangra dancers, a youth choir, poetry and a African fashion extravaganza. Food and information stalls will be open from 7pm. Performances start at 8pm. There will be a range of displays including Kent Police, Mid Kent College, Voice Medway, who have sponsored Black History Month this year. Medway Council's Portfolio Holder for Community Services, Cllr Howard Doe said: "The festival gives everyone the chance to celebrate and learn about the diverse cultures and traditions that are part of Medway's community.” The theme of this year’s Black History Month is the Journey Continues. Other events throughout the month include cultural folk dances, motivational talks by black men and women on their achievements, the history of black football players, street poetry, Islamic exhibition and a black achievers award ceremony. These are just a sample of the exciting events on offer throughout the month. There is something there for everyone from the whole community to enjoy.
