Congratulations or ¡Felicidades! to three adult learners

Date: 03/10/2008           Category: Adult Learning

It’s a hat-trick for three Medway adult learners. Thanks to their excellent exam results in GCSE Spanish, examination board Edexcel placed learners Keith Sewell, Justine Dunn and Aruna Perera in the top 10 out of 15,756 people across the country. All three achieved A* in their exams. Keith (33) from Borstal, Rochester said: “I’m really pleased with my result. It looks good on my CV and I hope to use it in the future to develop my career. I’d spent some time in Spain, and I’d been learning the language for fun, but it is great to have a formal qualification.” Mr Perera (60) from Gillingham said: “This is an unbelievable result for me; I was very surprised - I’ve never visited Spain! “My motivation for wanting to learn Spanish was because I like to read foreign news. Reading foreign newspapers gives you another angle that the British newspapers don’t report - it’s very interesting. “If you visit another country without knowing the language, you are always an outsider. If you really want to get to know about a country, its people and culture you need to mingle and knowing the language is essential for that.” 25-year-old Justine Dunn from Gravesend said: “Languages are my thing; I studied French and German all through school and German at university, I even worked and studied in Germany during my course. “I work as a languages teacher and decided to widen my scope by studying Spanish. “I was chuffed with the grade. I aimed for an A grade so it was a great feeling when I achieved an A star.” Helen Moller, Curriculum Manager for Modern Foreign Languages at Medway Adult Learning Service, said: “This is excellent news, not only for the three learners but for the adult learning service. “All three learners were dedicated and worked hard to achieve these results. Everyone at MALS sends their congratulations to them all and their tutor, Ana Rees.”
