Countdown to Christmas lights

Date: 05/11/2008           Category: Events

It’s only a couple of weeks before Medway’s town centres are lit up in time for the Christmas festivities and all those last minute shopping trips. The first switch on happens at The Central Theatre in Chatham High Street on Thursday, 20 November at 4pm with stars of this year’s pantomime Cinderella. Tara Verloop (Cinderella) and David Phipps-Davis (one of the Ugly Sisters) will be joined by the Mayor and Mayoress of Medway, Cllr David Carr and his wife Kirstine. Walkabout characters and entertainers will be in Chatham High Street from 2pm and KMFM's Vannessa Elms will host the event. The Gillingham lights will be switched on by the mayor, with special guest Peppa Pig at Smiths Square in the High Street on Friday, 28 November at 4.30pm. Activities start at 3.45pm including carol singing and Father Christmas himself is also expected to arrive. Don’t miss story time with Peppa Pig at Gillingham Library from 2pm to 2.30pm. The Strood Christmas Lights will be switched on at Friary Place (by Barclays Bank) on Saturday, 29 November. The mayor will be joined by children’s favourite Fifi and will push the magic button at 4.30pm. There will be family activities going on all afternoon from 12noon, including story time with Fifi at Strood Library from 12noon to 12.30pm. Rainham Shopping Centre welcomes Harry and his Bucket Full of Dinosaurs on Friday, 5 December. Harry will be appearing at intervals and helping the mayor to switch on the town’s lights with a sprinkling of magic snow at 5pm. Activities include choir singing, starting at 3.45pm. There will also be story time with Harry at Rainham Library from 2pm to 2.30pm. The events at Gillingham, Strood and Rainham will all be hosted by Invicta FM with competitions and prizes to be won. These events will also feature face painters, carousel rides, arts and crafts, dance groups and majorettes.
