Date: Friday, 14 November Time: Balloon release at 1.45pm Place: Park Wood Junior School, Deanwood Drive, Parkwood, Rainham Contacts: Cay Carlow on 07789944809 The skies will be filled with hundreds of blue balloons to mark World Diabetes Day. On Friday, 14 November, 350 children from Park Wood Junior School, Deanwood Drive, will release the balloons at 1.45pm to raise awareness of the condition. Type one diabetes is more common among children and adolescents and nearly 200 children are diagnosed with it a day and 440,000 across the world live with the illness. Community Diabetes Assistant Cay Carlow, who is part of the diabetes team based at Parkwood Health Centre, helped to organised the launch. She said: “This year the theme is diabetes among children and adolescents and we are delighted children from Park Wood Junior School wanted to get involve. “Type one diabetes is growing by three per cent every year in children and adolescents and five percent every year among the pre-school children. “We would like to thank everyone who has got involved to support this event.” The school’s headteacher, Susan Russell, said: “During assembly we did a show of hands asking the children about diabetes and a huge number knew someone with diabetes.”
