Media invite - young people celebrate new skills at DVD launch

Date: 13/11/2008           Category: Learning and Achievement

Students from Medway’s Key Stage 4 Engagement Project will be helping to launch a new DVD promoting the scheme on Monday, 17 November, 10am to 11am at the New Theatre Hall, situated at Mid Kent College’s Horsted site. The project offers a comprehensive range of motivating programmes for 14 to 16 year-olds who are underachieving at school and whose behaviour, attendance or social circumstances are barriers to their learning and achievement. Students targeted for projects such as this are at risk of disaffection, disengagement and social exclusion. In addition to this, students may also have a variety of learning needs. The Key Stage 4 Engagement Project is funded by the Department for Children, Schools and Families through the Learning and Skills Council. It comprises five different programmes, each with the aim of increasing the performance of students and enhancing their chances of progression to further education, training and employment. Students have the opportunity to take part in a range of work-related learning activities, access an alternative curriculum and receive personal advice and guidance. Partners in the project include Medway schools, crime reduction charity Nacro, Strood Youth Centre, Mid-Kent College of Further Education, and Medway Education Business Partnership. The launch event will feature a presentation of the KS4 Engagement Project DVD. Cllr Les Wicks, Medway’s Portfolio Holder for Children’s Services and Rose Collinson, Medway Council’s Director of Children and Adult Services, will be in attendance. There will also be a chance to interview some of the students who have benefited from the project. For more information about the scheme contact the KS4 Engagement Project Officer on 01634 338558.
