Private landlords can learn more about improving the quality of their housing at a conference in Chatham next week. Medway Council’s housing team is holding its third landlords’ forum on Saturday, 22 November at the council’s headquarters, Gun Wharf, in Dock Road, to ensure anyone who rents properties in the area has up-to-date information. The conference is a key part of the council’s ambitious plans to boost the standard of housing in Medway and bring the authority’s housing services up to scratch. A range of issues will be discussed including an update on the work of the private sector housing service, including new legislation on housing benefits, fire safety in privately rented properties, how Medway Council can effectively work with private landlords and how to make sure properties are energy efficient. Landlords will also be updated in the changes in legislation and how Medway Council will be enforcing these rules. There will also be a number of stands providing information from the council and some of its partners. Speakers include Marion Money from the National Landlords’ Association, Andy Norris from Kent Fire and Rescue Service, Medway Council’s Assistant Director of Housing and Corporate Services Deborah Upton and Susan Pledger, the council’s Private Sector Housing Manager. Medway Council’s Portfolio Holder for Community Services Cllr Howard Doe said: “We want to work with landlords to ensure people living in Medway are provided with good quality and safe housing. This conference is a chance for anyone involved in Medway’s tenancy market to find out how we can all work together to ensure high standards are met.” The free event takes place from 10am to 2.45pm, with registration and light refreshments available from 9.45am. Free parking is also available. For more details or to pre-register, please contact either Joy Potter on 01634 333580, or email to landlords@medway.gov.uk
