Shop local this Christmas, shop Medway. Medway residents planning their Christmas shopping are being urged to “think local and think Chatham”. With a wealth of shops offering value for money gift ideas from board games to books, slippers, perfume and music, the shops in Chatham have Christmas covered. Seasonal festivities kick off in Chatham on Saturday, 6 December with the Pentagon Christmas Parade. Santa will tour the High Street before taking up residence in his grotto in the Pentagon Shopping Centre. Santa will be joined for the parade by leading lady Tara Verloop, who plays Cinderella in The Central Theatre pantomime, and her Prince Charming Tom Yeates. The couple will make a stunning entrance, travelling in glamour model Jordan’s horse-drawn glass 'bubble' carriage, complete with footmen. On Saturday, 13 December, panto star Joe Swash will be signing autographs at the Pentagon Shopping Centre between 11am and 12noon, fresh from his triumphant appearance on I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here! Street entertainment will be provided every weekend in December. Carol singers, bell ringers, the Salvation Army Band and Chatham Group of Churches will fill the town with songs and music. Medway Council’s Portfolio Holder for Economic Growth Cllr Jane Chitty said: “We want to encourage shoppers to come to Medway this year. “Chatham High Street is home to some of the biggest retail names and offers a wide range of shops, including Debenhams, TK Maxx, Zavvi, Waterstones, Primark, Early Learning Centre, Boots and New Look. And after all that shopping, you can relax in one of the town’s cafes and coffee shops. “There are also many niche and specialist shops in Rochester, which appeal to shoppers looking for something a little different. “I’m pleased to see that our town centres are hosting a range of entertainment, including Christmas carols with the Salvation Army Band, to help get shoppers in to the festive spirit.” Street entertainment is also being laid on in Medway’s other main town centres. .
