Book flies the flag for manufacturing

Date: 26/11/2008           Category: Economic Development

A new book highlighting the innovative and exciting manufacturing companies in Medway has been officially unveiled at a launch event. Made in Medway 2 was launched at the University for the Creative Arts, Rochester on Tuesday, 25 November by Cllr Jane Chitty, Medway Council’s Portfolio Holder for Strategic Development and Economic Growth. The council’s Director of Regeneration and Development Robin Cooper will also launch the book to the business community at the Thames Gateway Forum today (Wednesday, 26 November). Made in Medway 2 aims to showcase Medway outside of the area and fly the flag for manufacturing. Companies featured range from international players to local suppliers - all are at the cutting edge of technology. Cllr Chitty said: “Medway has a long tradition of engineering and manufacturing with around 11 per cent of the local workforce still employed in this sector today. Mass manufacturing may have moved abroad but this has paved the way for smaller, more flexible, niche market businesses to emerge.” Sponsors of the book are Medway Council, BAE Systems, South East Manufacturing Advisory Service, MEP (Medway Economic Partnership) UCA (University for the Creative Arts), the University of Greenwich and Tonic. The book is a follow-up to Made in Medway, which showcased the creative industries in the area.
