Trading Tales - a unique performance by young people from Medway

Date: 04/12/2008           Category: Arts and Libraries

More than 40 young people from Medway will perform a travelling play inspired by Rochester’s historic settings in December. Trading Tales is the result of a 10-week drama project for young people aged between 12 and 18. Working with Play on Words Community Theatre Company and Medway Council’s Arts Development Team, the students have attended weekly evening workshops at The Brook Theatre, Chatham and spent two days at The Guildhall and Eastgate House in Rochester. Inspired by these beautiful and atmospheric buildings, they have devised their own dramatic production. Welcomed straight into the heart of the action, the audience will be split into two groups and invited to tour the buildings room by room, meeting mysterious characters from the past along the way. Once each group has explored both The Guildhall and Eastgate House, they will be led to Rochester Castle Gardens, where they will witness the final scene unfold under the stars, with mulled wine and mince pies on hand to keep out the cold. Medway Council’s Education and Outreach Officer Robyn Goldsmith said: "The young people have all been working so hard creating characters and stories inspired by these amazing buildings in Rochester. It is such a wonderful opportunity for them to work with professional actors from Play On Words Community Theatre Company in such beautiful surroundings. I think their family, friends and the general public are going to be really impressed with the results when they perform their play in December." The project has been generously funded by The National Lottery through Awards for All, with additional funds from Medway Council. Trading Tales will be performed in Rochester on Friday, 12 December at 7.30pm, Saturday, 13 December at 5pm and 7.30pm, and Sunday, 14 December at 4pm. Tickets cost £1.50 and are available from the Brook Theatre box office on 01634 338338. Audience members are advised to wear warm clothes and comfortable footwear.
