Rochester’s Vines gets the Green Flag

Date: 04/12/2008           Category: Events

A happy huddle of characters from Rochester’s Dickensian Festival will gather outside Restoration House and raise a glass to celebrate the new green flag status of The Vines. Costumed characters including Miss Havisham and members of The Pickwick Club will meet at Restoration House on Saturday, 6 December at 11am. Members of the media are welcome to attend. The Vines is among a record 742 green spaces across the country to have received the award this year. Open spaces that are awarded a Green Flag have been judged as welcoming and well maintained and reflect the support and involvement of the local community. Dickens refers to The Vines in a number of his novels and in his short story Seven Poor Travellers. Restoration House was used as Statis House in Great Expectations, the home of Miss Haversham. The City of Rochester Society has produced a leaflet about the history of The Vines which is available at the Visitor Information Centre in Rochester High Street.
