Sparkling success for Medway’s star.

Date: 05/12/2008           Category: Learning and Achievement

Medway Council’s Work Experience Coordinator Jo Budd has beaten thousands of people to win Shaw Trust’s National Star Award. The annual event took place at Vinopolis, London on 20 November and actor Brian Blessed was on hand to present the award. Shaw Trust is a national charity that provides training and employment services to thousands of disabled and disadvantaged people each year. Jo, a 44 year-old mother of two from Rochester, has mentored many Shaw Trust clients and helped build their confidence and skills as they move towards getting employment. She works alongside people who haven’t worked for a long time and are extremely nervous. Jo joined Medway Council’s Learning and Organisational Development Department two years ago and coordinated a staggering 287 work placements last year. She said: "I feel honoured and thrilled to have won this award. Working with Shaw Trust to support their clients has been an absolute pleasure and seeing the clients' confidence grow throughout their placement has been very rewarding. I hope that the awareness of Shaw Trust, raised by the publicity from these awards, will result in more companies offering to support their excellent work". Portfolio Holder for Community Services Cllr Howard Doe said: “Jo Budd is truly a star. This is a fantastic achievement for Jo, the work that she does is invaluable and it is great to see that she is being recognised for all the effort that she puts in. I couldn’t think of a more worthy winner.”
