Ebooks and Audio Books available for download

Date: 08/04/2011           Category: Libraries and Archives

Thousands of electronic and audio books are now available from Medway's libraries, 24 hours a day, with the launch of a new free download service.

You can browse the collection, check out with your library card, and download to computers and personal devices.

Titles are automatically returned at the end of the loan period so there are no late fees.

The service launched on Tuesday, 26 April with titles available in e-book and e-audio format. All users have to do is go to medway.lib.overdrive.com

Users will need to install free software, which is available when they first logon to download a book.

For audiobooks: OverDrive® Media Console™. To read eBooks, users will need Adobe® Digital Editions. Titles can be enjoyed immediately or transferred to a variety of devices, including iPod®, Sony® Reader™, and many others. Some audio titles can also be burned to CD to listen on-the-go. Titles will automatically expire at the end of the lending period.

You can download up to three eBooks and eAudiobooks and have them for up to 3 weeks, after which they will just disappear from the device to which you have downloaded them.

There is no need to return the eBooks to a library and no fines to pay. You can borrow the same books again after this period if no one else wants to borrow them. Now all you have to do is sit back and enjoy the titles that we have on offer.

Richard Hicks, the council's assistant director whose responsibilities includes libraries, said:
"This is a fantastic new service that revolutionises access to our libraries. Borrowers can view our range of titles from the comfort of their own home, make their choice and then download them in an instant; and they never need worry again about having them out for too long because the returns will be automatic and electronic."
