Residents in Medway are being warned about bogus phone calls from companies offering legal help with accident claims.
Several elderly residents have recently contacted Medway Council about such calls, during which the caller claims to be working alongside the council and local GPs. When challenged about the name of their company, the callers are evasive and unwilling to provide their details, and their phone number is withheld.
All claims management business have to be registered with The Claims Management Regulator and Medway Council does not provide residents’ details to any such companies.
Cllr Mike O’Brien, Medway Council’s Portfolio Holder for Community Safety and Customer Contact, said: “I would urge everyone to be vigilant when receiving unwanted calls to their home, and never give their personal details to someone they don’t know. Scams where companies claim to be working with established organisations can take advantage of older and more vulnerable residents in particular. If you are in any way unsure about who you are speaking to, just hang up”.
Anyone receiving “cold calls” from companies claiming to be working with Medway Council can contact Customer First for advice on 01634 333333.
