It was undoubtedly a year of celebrity baby news, with stars welcoming arrivals such as Harper Seven Beckham, Mirabella Bunny (daughter of Bryan Adams) and Flynn Bloom (son of Orlando Bloom and Miranda Kerr).
But the celebs’ choices failed to impress on Medway’s top ten baby names for 2011.
Instead, Medway’s mums and dads opted for more traditional names, with some even featuring in the top ten a century ago, including George, Alfred (Alfie) and Charles (Charlie).
And it seems as if the Royal Wedding and the Middleton effect held little sway among local parents as well, with no Pippas registered in Medway this year, just two Kates and William not among the top ten for boys.
The list is compiled by Medway Council’s Register Office, based in Northgate, Rochester, which has been registering births, deaths and marriages in Medway since 1837.
Harry and Lily retained their top spot from last year, and are joined in the top ten by other regular firm favourites such as Jessica, Jack and Oliver.
Newcomers include Riley, in seventh place for the boys, Mia – fourth for the girls and Joshua – the eighth most popular boys name.
More than 800 babies were registered in Medway in 2011, with Ruby, Harry, Alfie, Charlie, George, Grace, Chloe and Emily all mainstays from the previous year.
Making celebrity debuts in Medway this year were Harper, with just one, a single Flynn.
Cllr said: “Choosing a baby name is always an exciting and sometimes quite tricky decision for mums and dads and it’s interesting to see that here in Medway, the traditional choices are still popular.
“It’s been a busy year for our Registry Office and seeing the comparisons between names registered this year and those 100 years ago, is a really interesting read.”
