Her name is Rio and she's coming to The Central Theatre

Date: 07/01/2008           Category: Arts and Libraries

The Rio Roberts Quartet will play the first Medway Jazz Cellar of 2008, performing at The Central Theatre's Cellar Bar on Tuesday, 15 January, 8pm. The quartet is led by vocalist Rio Roberts, with vibrant support from pianist Rodney Mendonca, bass player Tony Archer and Derek Gayle on drums. This will be a night of infectious songs that swing to the sounds of cool, sophisticated instrumentation and the rich, immaculate phrasings of Rio Roberts. Roberts first made her name in the 80s, singing and playing flute underground bands The Academy and The Exotic Pets, before forming Rio and The Robots, who released several singles through Arista Records. The Rio Roberts Quartet are regulars at some of London's finest jazz haunts, including 606 Club and The Oxo Tower, and for the last three years have been the featured band at the BBC Gardeners' World Show in Birmingham. Tickets cost £8, jazz mailing list members £7.
