Date: 22/01/2008           Category: Learning and Achievement

Chatham Grammar School for Girls has been judged to be “a good school with outstanding strengths” by Ofsted in its latest inspection. You are invited to send a photographer and/or reporter to the school, on Rainham Road, Chatham, at 10am on Monday 28 January to meet the pupils and staff at work. There are 989 pupils aged 11 to 19 years old. Headteacher David Gundry said: “Of the 38 areas examined by the inspectors, they concluded that we are outstanding at 20 and good at the rest. Ofsted have a reputation for being understated in their praise, but their judgements actually were slightly higher than our own self-evaluations. It appears we are too modest!” The school achieved an overall ‘good’ rating. Outstanding aspects include the care, guidance and support it provides, the personal development and well-being of its students, and the overall quality of education for its sixth form, which numbers 280 students. The report quotes parents and students interviewed during the inspection in mid-December. One parent said: “The school’s ethos is to nurture and support the pupils”. Year 7-10 students added: “There’s always someone to help you. The school is very supportive, whether it’s something academic or to do with the family. Your confidence builds up.” Standards reached by the school’s academically able students are generally above national averages, the report states. Students do particularly well in maths, design technology and science. Teachers are judged to be well-qualified with confident subject knowledge. Their rapport with students is based on mutual respect and shared goals, the inspectors found. The first public announcement of the inspection results was during the school’s annual A-level Prizegiving. Mayor of Medway Cllr Val Goulden presented the prizes and congratulated all the students on their achievements, and all the staff on their well-deserved Ofsted Report. Medway Council’s Portfolio Holder for Children’s Services, Cllr Les Wicks, said: “Congratulations to the staff and students of Chatham Grammar School for Girls on this superb Ofsted report. They are clearly among those setting the pace for secondary education in Medway.” Director of Children’s Services Rose Collinson added: “This inspection rightly celebrates the very good outcomes the staff team provide for students at Chatham Grammar School for Girls. Students are very well supported personally and academically and given opportunities to develop their skills, talents and promise.”
