Date: 04/02/2008           Category: Learning and Achievement

Chapter School in Strood is a good school where the strong family ethos enables students to progress well, according to its latest Ofsted inspection, which gives the school an overall rating of Good. You are invited to send a photographer and/or reporter to the school, on Carnation Road, Strood, at 10am on Wednesday 13 February to meet the pupils and staff at work. There are 1088 pupils aged 11 to 18 years old. Head Teacher Sue Dore is described as “committed and effective”, and her leadership team have brought improvements in GCSE standards, with a rise in the proportion of students achieving five or more GCSEs. Students’ good personal development and well-being go hand in hand with good achievement, the report states. Together, these elements are preparing students well for the demands of their adult and working life. The inspector also found that the “friendly and caring environment” of the school makes pupils feel very safe and confident. This results in good quality care, guidance and support for all students, including the high number with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. Some teaching is described as “outstanding”, and overall teaching and learning are rated as good. Lessons are described as “typically brisk” and reflect teachers’ enthusiasm and good subject-specific skills, especially in vocational subjects. A good range of vocational courses is offered, and the school’s specialist status in Business Studies and ICT has resulted in students developing good business and enterprise skills, the report states. Head Teacher Sue Dore said: “This was a good inspection result for us that recognises the positive character of the school and the high standards we seek to achieve. Everybody here deserves to take credit from this report and I’m very proud of what we have achieved.” Medway Council’s Portfolio Holder for Children’s Services, Cllr Les Wicks, said: “Well done to Chapter School on a good Ofsted assessment. The school is clearly serving its pupils well in preparing them for life and work, which is a great accomplishment for any school to aspire to.” Director of Children’s Services Rose Collinson added: “This inspection rightly celebrates the very good outcomes the staff provide for students at Chapter School. Students are very well supported personally and academically and given opportunities to develop their skills, talents and promise.” [ends]
