A deep clean is currently being carried out at St Bart’s Hospital. All four wards at the hospital on New Road, Rochester, are included in the deep clean. A cleaning contractor started the work on Thursday, 13 March. The areas included in the deep clean are bed areas, bathrooms and toilets, day and dining rooms, ward kitchens and pantry, sluice rooms and treatment rooms. Walls, high areas, light fittings, radiators and vents are also included. The wards are being cleaned one at a time to minimise disruption to patients and staff. Ward sisters are managing the cleaning rota alongside the cleaning contractor. Medway Primary Care Trust's Executive Nurse Pippa Barber said: “Medway PCT is working hard to reduce the number of healthcare associated infections and deep cleaning Barts is an important part of our plans. All the wards and clinical areas are being thoroughly cleaned to ensure they provide the cleanest possible environment for our patients. "Medway PCT will ensure that regular 'deep cleans' become part of its on-going cleaning programme at Barts." All NHS hospitals have been instructed by the Department of Health to carry out a deep clean by the end of this year to tackle the spread of infections such as MRSA and C Diff.
