Gala garden gigs

Date: 09/04/2008           Category: Events

Despite the weather, British summertime is officially here and thoughts in Medway are turning to the Castle Concerts Tickets sales broke box-office records this year when Status Quo sold out in just seven days. But, if rock isn’t your thing, there are three more fantastic nights planned in the Rochester Castle Gardens. The stage is set for a Soul Party on Wednesday, 16 July. Headlining the gig is The Edwin Starr band featuring Angelo Starr. It is an infectious brand of soul-funk, defying any audience not to dance. The brother of the late Edwin Starr leads his sibling's top-rated backing band through a classic R’n’B and soul set. Angelo toured with his brother for many years and has worked with an array of artistes, including Lemar and Alexander O’Neal. Also appearing on the bill is Brenda Edwards - a familiar face to many, thanks to her X-Factor success. Performances at the Pigalle Club, Ronnie Scott’s and stage roles as Mama Morton in Chicago and Pearl in Carmen Jones have sealed Brenda’s status as a singer with an “unstoppable voice”. Brenda has wowed critics and audiences alike, including those who saw her supporting Smokey Robinson in Rochester Castle Gardens last year. The Soul Traders complete the Soul Party line-up. With high-stepping horns, a driving rhythm section and hard working vocalists, the band performs classic US soul and R’n’B numbers from the Atlantic, Stax and Motown labels. The Soul Traders recreate the unique arrangements and instrumental sounds that typified the very best soul shows in their heyday, setting them apart from other tribute bands. Delivering energy, excitement and showmanship, The Soul Traders are guaranteed to get any crowd up and dancing in minutes. Events Manager Carl Madjitey said: "I would seriously advise people not to leave it too late to get their tickets for this year's Castle Concerts. They are selling well and it would be a shame if you want tickets but then don't manage to get them.'' Tickets for Soul Party cost £20. The following night, Thursday, 17 July, sees the return of Jools Holland and his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra with special guests Mark Almond, Gilson Lavis, Ruby Turner and Louise Marshall. Tickets are £30. The grand finale to the Castle Concerts, courtesy of the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra, takes place Saturday, 19 July with the Castle Proms. Tickets are £27.
