Welcome to Learning
Medway Council is committed to realising everyone's potential and improving levels of achievement in the local community. The council believes firmly in the principles of lifelong learning and is dedicated to developing educational opportunities.
Medway has a relatively young population, with 20.1 per cent of its people aged 14 or below. One of Medway Council’s top priorities is to ensure that young children are provided with the highest-quality opportunities to learn. Its early years development plan was singled out for praise by the government.
Medway has 114 schools, including six grammar schools, with a total of almost 45,000 pupils. Medway Council has an innovative approach to youth activities. Its Youth Parliament, the only one in Kent, was set up because Medway Council believes that young people can play a powerful role in reinvigorating local democracy and should be involved in issues and decisions affecting their future.
Medway Children's University has won national acclaim and was chosen by the National Foundation for Educational Research as one of the best examples of learning initiatives outside of school hours. The foundation evaluated 50 projects that received funding from the Department for Education and Skills and chose the Children's University as one for an in-depth study.
The leaflet What Medway Council does for children and where to go for help (pdf 549KB) tells you about the variety of services for children, young people and their families in Medway.
