Medway Culture and Design Awards

Celebrating excellence in Medway
The 2012 Medway Culture and Design Awards were held on
Thursday, 6 December 2012 at a gala celebration at the Corn
Exchange, Rochester, and represented the culmination of our
Year of Celebration.
The awards acknowledged the initiative, hard work, inspiration
and talent of groups and individuals for their outstanding
contributions to Medway’s cultural vitality.
Short-listed nominees in 11 categories were invited to the gala
awards evening, where the winners were announced in the
presence of Medway VIPs and guests.
An inspirational speech was given by Mr Martin Green who
was Head of Ceremonies at the London 2012 Olympic and
Paralympic Games and had overall responsibility for planning the
opening and closing ceremonies, the torch relay and medal
ceremonies for the 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic
Games.

Winner: "WOW" Magazine
The award recognised outstanding innovation, creativity, content
and use of new technologies.
The winner was a project which has brought together
in one place the best of everything that is going on in
Medway.

Tourism
Winner: The People's
Monarch at Rochester Cathedral
This award recognises businesses or
products that have delivered the very best in quality, innovation
and service. The winning project had more
than 30,000 people visit in just 10 days, bringing visitors
from all over the country to Medway.

Diggerland received a Highly Commended from
the judges.
Fashion and design
Winner: Zara Carpenter
Individuals or projects that were
breaking new ground or demonstrating new techniques, approaches and
design solutions.
The winner offered pieces that were
highly original and made to an exceptionally high
standard.

Commended for Best Newcomer.
Open Spaces and Public Realm
Winner:
Full Frontal
Innovative and creative use of public space that delivered
an experience that is beneficial for the public and for the place
of Medway.

The Place Making Project by the School of Arts received a Highly
Commended.
Food and Drink
Winner: Slim Sam's Cakery
This award was for the best locally produced food or
drink.
The winner showed true innovation in creating something
not only delicious but also good for us.

Heritage
Winner:
The Royal Engineers Museum Library and Archive
The winner fell in line with the Brompton 200 celebrations,
recognising 200 years of the Royal Engineers here in
Medway.
Minor Canon Row and School of Arts, Historic Dockyard also
received Highly Commended from the judges.

Music
Winner: Orchestra ONE
Orchestra ONE, the winner of this category was about
passion and engagement. It has managed to create a melting pot of
class, gender, ethnicity, taste and age.
144 Club and Maritime Festival received a Highly Commended
from the judges.

Performing Arts
Winner: Icon Theatre
Recognising the outstanding achievement of individual
performers, groups and organisations in reaching and developing new
audiences, contributing to the performing arts scene in
Medway.
Icon Theatre were the winners, offering an continuing
performing arts outreach programme, designed specifically for
excluded and disadvantaged communities, and it shows us how
important our imaginations are in creating and responding to
theatre.
Dizzy O'Dare received a Highly Commended.

Literature
Winner: Bill Lewis
This category was open to entrants from any literary discipline,
and the judges were looking for excellence, innovation, creativity
and a contribution to the development of Medway’s literary
heritage. The winner was Bill Lewis who is a very
accomplished literary figure, a fantastic cultural ambassador for
Medway, and who makes a significant impact on Medway’s ever-growing
cultural identity.
Highly Commended went to ME4 Writers.

New Build
Winner: Strood Academy
The winner of this category, Strood Academy,
raised the bar in excellence and design. The project was
wholly innovative in its approach to construction, sustainability
and renewable energy, with Medway’s first wind turbine in a
school.
Highly commended went to Walderslade Primary and Berkeley
First.

Visual Arts
Winner: Billy Childish
The most hotly contested of all of tonight’s awards and it was a
feat in itself to just make the shortlist.
Billy Childish, the winner, is a local cult
icon, an internationally celebrated painter, writer and
musician with an impressive body of work that is staggering both in
scope and scale.

The Special Achievement award went to Full Frontal
and coFWD were given a certificate recognising their
achievement in Urban Regeneration.
Thanks to everyone who took the time to complete the
nomination form and who were involved in the delivery of these
awards and special thanks to the judging panel for giving up their
time and support in the very difficult decision of picking the
winners.
